                                                  Group Biography



Barry Deister – Composer, saxophone/flute

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Barry Deister cut his teeth with some of the best musicians of that City.  In 1989-91 after moving to Oregon on the West coast he assembled a collaborative quintet of musicians from both the East coast and West coast called “East/West Dialogue”  which included New York based pianist/composer Jim McNeely as well as Chicago based musicians David Urban on trumpet, Kelly Sill on bass and Joel Spencer on drums.

Paul Mazzio – Trumpet

Paul Mazzio is one of the most talented jazz trumpet players in the Pacific Northwest.  Firmly rooted in the post-bop idiom, his rich trumpet sound and creative improvisations make him one of the most in demand musicians in Portland. He has toured internationally with the Woody Herman Orchestra..

Julien Wilson – Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone

Julien Wilson is a saxophonist from Melbourne, Victoria Australia. He’s featured on award winning albums with Barney McAll, Sam Anning, Andrea Keller, Vanessa Perica, Stu Hunter, Jonathan Zwartz and Kristin Berardi. Albums released on his own label, Lionsharecords regularly feature in “top seller” and “best of” lists. He is the recipient of the 2015 APRA Art Music Award for Excellence in Jazz, a trifecta of Australian Jazz ‘Bell’ Awards in 2014.

 Andrea Keller – Piano

Highly lauded with multiple awards, Andrea has received three ARIA Awards, seven Australian Jazz ‘Bell’ Awards, two Art Music Awards (including the award for Excellence in Jazz), an APRA Professional Development Award, a Music Victoria Award – Best Jazz Album, a fellowship from the Australia Council, and the inaugural MCA / Freedman Foundation Jazz Fellowship. Andrea most recently won the Music Victoria, Industry Voted Award for Best Jazz Act in 2021.

 Sam Anning – Bass

 Based in Melbourne, Australia, Sam Anning has been a major player in Australian jazz, regularly performing with such jazz greats such as the late Allan Browne, Barney McAll, Andrea Keller, Paul Grabowsky and Jamie Oehlers.

Anning has toured extensively throughout North America and internationally with performances at the Montreal, Vancouver Detrioit jazz festivals.He has been fortunate to perform with Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Ari Hoenig, Greg Osby, Charlie Haden and many others.

 Sam Bates – Drums

 Sam Bates has performed extensively throughout Australia and abroad with a variety of artists including Scott Tinkler, Katie Noonan, Christine Anu and Joe Chindamo.  He has been a finalist in the National Jazz Awards, received a fellowship from the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music and recently been awarded the Alan C Rose Memorial Trust Scholarship from the Victorian College of the Arts.
